In May 2010, Pennsylvania became the first state in the nation to partner with Foursquare by populating the network with more than 200 state tourism attractions and creating three custom badges: “PA Shooflyer“, “PA Retail Polka“, and “PA 4 Score & 7“. In 2011, PA launched a brand new badge: Lock & Keystone.

On Feb. 2, 2012, 26,903 Foursquare users worldwide checked-in on Foursquare to shout “groundhog” and earned our 2012 Groundhog badge. Did you miss out last year? No worries! This Groundhog Day, you can earn the 2013 Groundhog badge by following these fun and simple steps:

1. Follow visitPA on Foursquare by going to foursquare.com/visitpa
2. Check in anywhere in the world and shout “groundhog” between 12:00am – 11:59pm EST on February 2, 2013
3. If you check in from Gobbler’s Knob, show your check-in to the attendant at the Groundhog RV to receive a Groundhog prize!

This year, Foursquare is encouraging your election participation with the introduction of a limited-edition “I Voted 2012” badge. To earn the badge, simply run down to your local polling place, cast your ballot, and check into Foursquare with the hashtag #ivoted. Follow those tips and you’ll receive your handy dandy election badge. And you’ll be so proud. And we’ll be so proud.

Foursquare teamed up with folks at Engage, Google, the Voting Information Project, the Pew Center on the States, and the New Organizing Institute to help you make the most of the 2012 elections.

Connect the “I Voted” app to your Foursquare account today. You’ll be able to find your polling station and learn about the candidates and propositions that will be on your ballot ahead of time. Powered by the Google Civic Information API.

Afterward, make sure to check out the Foursquare elections site to see check-ins from across the country. The website will host real-time interactive maps and information such as the total number of updates with the #ivoted hashtag, the most popular places where Foursquare users are voting, and other breakdowns like the gender of those who voted. The website will go live on November 6th.
