This is a guest post by the co-founder of Checkin Cashin, a site that matches Foursquare checkins with daily deals to only give you deals from places you care about.
Speaking at SxSW Interactive on Monday, Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley talked about the history of Foursquare and where it’s headed. He also gave a number of stats, including that Foursquare has accumulated over 3 billion checkin-data points from 30 million years (double from last year). Interestingly, he also said that 60% of Foursquare’s users are outside of the United States.
Dennis spent the bulk of the on-stage conversation talking about the power of their data. That included time on partners that use Foursquare to power location sharing (e.g. Instagram, Path, etc). Talking to this, Dennis said locations points are a “living breathing datasite” and Foursquare is “a lot fresher than anything out there” due to its community. He wants to use this data to help merchants find their best customers and to provide users with great recommendations.
In addition to revealing some stats about Foursquare and where it’s headed, Dennis also talked about his personal life. Dennis recently got engaged and when he hold his mother, her reaction was to ask if there would be a badge at his wedding. Dennis replied to her with “absolutely not”, which drew tons of laughs from the crowd. Who wants to bet the staff will make a badge anyways?
